Abstract

The characteristics of traditional building materials has been paid more and more attention, such as the high energy consumption, serious environmental pollution and over-exploitation of resource. Municipal engineering is gradually growing into an important direction of development as a new type of material with low carbon emission, energy saving, recycling and performance in protecting environment. Furthermore, this paper reviews the types and properties of current eco-friendly materials for road and bridge uses. It uses case studies to explore how they stack up in terms of durability, cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits. It further evaluates the sustainability of these materials, identifies technical and institutional challenges that must be overcome for broad scale adoption as well as elicits trends for future development and research needs. In addition to prolonging the service life and improving performance of municipal roads and bridges, they also effectively reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact as well as providing a solid basis for continuity on green infrastructure development realization and urban sustainability from design.
