Abstract
Against the backdrop of accelerated aging, promoting the mental health of the elderly has become an urgent issue to be addressed. This paper utilizes the DID model and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study panel data to quantify the impact of smart cities on the mental health of the elderly and analyzes the mechanism of its influence. The results indicate that smart cities are conducive to promoting the mental health of the elderly. Heterogeneity research shows that the construction of smart cities has a more significant impact on the mental health of elderly people with chronic diseases. However, there are still issues such as the decoupling of the elderly's learning abilities and reduced interpersonal interactions in smart cities. Therefore, this paper proposes suggestions such as optimizing the user interface, improving the transparency of information, strengthening personal privacy protection, and creating digital mutual aid community platforms.
