Abstract

The Harlem Renaissance suggests the enormous change in how African Americans saw themselves and their possibilities, and it also indicates a new cohesiveness in the African American community, beginning in Harlem and reaching outward. This paper probes into the main historical forces that brought the Harlem Renaissance into being and it helps students to have a better understanding of that period of history in African American literature teaching.
