Abstract

This paper looks at two sample conversations between Chinese police officers and foreigners from the perspectives of context of situation and communication role. The analysis is performed within the framework of Hallidayan Systemic Functional Grammar, with the aim to describe the discourse features in the dialogues studied in regard to the expression of specific meanings and conveyance of messages.
